Book Report-Activity # 1
The Color Purple
(Plot)
The novel of
Color Purple Purple is by Alice Walker. This is a wondrous Pulitzer Prize winning novel. This is a touching story. When I first looked at the title, I could the author is using the color to express her feeling of this novel. Alice Walker uses her special skill to create the structure of this play. When I read the play, I could not feel I am reading a play and its name is "The Color Purple". It is very sensitive. It makes the distance between the characters and me very close. So why are we still waiting, let me introduce them to all of you guys right now.In fact, there are so many characters in this story. Some of them, I almost forgot their names. But any way, the important people of this novel I still remember in my heart--Celie, Nettie, Shug, Albert, Samuel, Adam and Olivia. How are their relationships between each other? Certainly, I'll tell you soon.
Ok, let me make it clear, I almost can hear the heartbeat from the characters. The most important character is named Celie. She is a watcher, viewer for another words, you could say that she is a narrator of this story. She wrote a lot to God to express her sadness. Celie lived in a poor little town. Her father was a despicable rogue. When she was only fourteen years old, he raped her. For this reason, her rape had a profound psychological effect on her. She was afraid of him when she saw him came forward to her. She tried to be a good girl, nevertheless, sometimes, he liked to beat her anytime and without any reasons. And she got a daughter and son by her father. They were called Olivia and Adam. Samuel adopted both of them.
Celie's mother died because she was very sick. Celie had one sister who was named Nettie. Nettie is a schoolteacher; she got more education and knowledge than Celie. They love each other very much, especially Celie, after she knew his father had some interest on Nettie. She tried to protect her as best as she can. For not that long, Nettie got a boyfriend (Albert) whose wife had passed away already. He had four children. Albert was not a good man, he didn't love her at all on account of he just wanted a women to take care of his kids. However, Celie's pa did not let her sister get married with him. Her father was a tricky fox, he told Albert Nettie is lazy, sick all the time and insulted she was not a fresh girl right now. This is the first reason, but for the second reason, Nettie could not marry with him because Celie was older than her. Finally, Albert chose Celie instead of Nettie to marry with him
Albert and his child treated her very bad, except Harpo. He ordered her to do this and do that. If Celie didn't listen to him, he will give her a big punch. Nettie left her father and wanted live to with her sister, but just for a few days, he kicked her out of his house. As you can see life wasn't easy for Celie, but she knew how to survive, and needed little to get by.
Shug was a flamboyant blues singer and she was gay. Every body knew her name in this town. Albert was the one of her fans and fall in love with her. Once a time, Shug got very sick and was almost dying. But Albert didn't mind he picked her up to living in his house. Celie was a servant, she was doing everything for her and she could not disobey her. If she did, she might beat or yell at her. Oh, what pity girl! Wasn't she? Anyway, good people always can get a good return in their life. Somehow, Shug felt sorry what she did to Celie. She helped Celie get back her courage and confidence for living in this world. Shug asked a lot about Celie's personal secret. Celie forgave her and told Shug all about her sadness.
After Nettie left her, she got no messages from her. She really was missing about her all the times. For recent of years, she not even mailed one letter to her. Therefore, she though Nettie might be dead already. Is that true? No, No, that is totally wrong if you think that way. But how come? Ok, let me tell you, that were all Abert's fault, he collected all letters that Nettie mailed for Celie. Shug stole all the letters from Abert's truck, and gave to Celie. Celie read every letter carefully, Nettie told her lot things about herself and discovered. Something made Celie feel happy and someone made her mad. So, why is she happy, and mad? Some reasons you should already, she happy that her sister did not died yet. Right now, she was a missionary. Nettie also told her both of her children were grown up; they travel many places, such as New York, Africa and England etc. She was made because her pa never told her that she wasn't her daughter. Her husband wanted to rape Nettie while she left the house on the road. Nettie hurt him, then he promised not to give any letter to Celie that Nettie mailed to her. So, she decided to stand up against Albert.
Albert was so surprised that she had courage to fight with him and was not afraid of him any more. Somehow, day after day, he had fallen in love to Celie because she got good temperament. He changed his bad attitude and bad habit. Something that he was craved for her. In fact, Celie had noticed his changing and soon, she fell in love with him too. Finally, they really got back together and you know what? Yeah! That is true love not as before. As days passed, Nettie and Samuel came back with Celie's children. Although Nettie, and Celie were older but they did not feel old at all.
To tell you the truth, after I read this book, I learned many things from this novel. It told us, we should stand up if someone is a bully. Do not stand there like a deaf-mute person. Celie is a good example for us to learn from. So what do think?
